An interview with Jo Reynolds, the first female UK firefighter, a motivational speaker & renowned twitter.
Ahead of our April event on Breaking Barriers, Ian McDowell, one of our funding Trustees and CEO of Power Patient Medicine (http://www.patientpoweredmedicine.com/), jumped on a train to Norfolk, to meet with Josephine (Jo) Reynolds, our keynote speaker. A force to be reckoned with, Jo truly broke barriers by working at the fire station in Thetford, as the first woman firefighter in the UK. She applied aged 17 and after 15 months training she became a full time firefighter. In her adventure, she remained a woman among men.
Here is what she had to say:
On her boss: He was very calm, he just got on with it. Nigel - he was my blessing. Once I got through my training he recognized me as one of his own and told me to get on with the day job, as obviously I could.
On Grenfell Tower: I was in shock with the rest of the Nation. The feeling that you were absolutely helpless. I was interviewed about the incident, I knew that whatever happened the thing that would stay with everyone would be the people that couldn't be reached, despite the best efforts of the fire fighters. I remember the great dignity of the Chief at the time.
On the Book Club: very much looking forward to meeting all the people that will attend. Every time I get to a new audience, I am amazed by the participation and the questions and I can't wait to be there.
